Police in Mangochi has established traffic and community wardens in the district’s busy trading centres and accident prone areas to ease traffic congestions and road obstructions.
The initiative was jointly rolled out by the station’s traffic and community policing officers led by the station’s Community Policing Coordinator, Inspector Roster Milanzi on March 13, 2021 at Makawa Trading Centre.
Speaking to the gathering, Milanzi said consolidated data on road accidents in the district show that many lives and property are at stake and that this is what has made the police to involve members of the community in addressing the situation.
“The main objective of this initiative is to promote community participation in regulation of traffic and crime management with the view to ensure smooth movement of vehicles and prevent crime and disorder.
“The wardens shall assist the police in the regulation and control of traffic and crime management in general,” narrated Milanzi.
In his few remarks, Abdul-Razack Nice who represented Group Village Headman Makawa commended the police for coming up with the initiative in his area and promised to support the wardens.
Nice also applauded community policing structures in his area which he described as vibrant in crime reduction.
The station is expected to stretch the initiative to other areas in the district to reduce road accidents and bring sanity in its entire policing jurisdiction.
