The Burundian and Rwandan Business Community (BRC) in Mangochi has renovated and furnished five washrooms at Mangochi Police Station, restoration facilities that had remained unusable for several years due to their deteriorated condition.
The renovated facilities, valued at K19.7 million, were officially handed over during a ceremony held at the station premises on Friday, August 14, 2026.
This follows an appeal for support to improve sanitation facilities at the police station.
Speaking during the ceremony, Chairperson of BRC, Emmanuel Mussah, said the group decided to support the renovation after observing the poor condition of the washrooms.
Mussah said the project demonstrated the community’s commitment to working together with government institutions for the benefit of society, while also strengthening the relationship between the police and the community.
Receiving the modern facilities, Officer-in-Charge of Mangochi Police Station, Mr. Ulemu Kalua, Deputy Commissioner of Police, expressed appreciation for the generous support.
Kalua said the renovation had come at an important time, considering that the washrooms had been out of use for several years , saying the situation was very pathetic, and it possed health threats to officers.
He highlighted that the police is an institution that receives a large number of visitors daily, making proper sanitation essential and the support has restored a clean,and dignified environment.
He further called upon other well-wishers to emulate the initiative by supporting the police in areas where assistance is needed to promote better service delivery.
Echoing Kalua’s sentiments, Group Village Headman Mtalimanja said the renovation demonstrated that community members have an important role to play in supporting government institutions and improving service delivery.
He urged the police to take good care of the renovated facilities so that they remain useful for many years.
