Man slapped 5-years IHL for found in possession of cannabis sativa

The Lilongwe Senior Grade Magistrate’s (SRM) Court has convicted and sentenced a 79-year-old man, Alfred Chagaga to spend 5 years in jail for being found in possession of cannabis sativa

The court heard through the Station’s Prosecution Officer (SPO) Assistant Supritendent Evance Kantukule from Kawale Police that on July 28, 2025, police got information from well wishers, revealing that Alfred Chagaga was keeping in his house 18 bags of Indian hemp with a total mass of 681.38 kilograms in Nanjiri location.

Detectives acted upon the information leading to his arrest.

Appearing in Court, Alfred Chagaga pleaded not guilty to the charge leveled against him prompting the state to parade 3 witnesses who proved the case against him

In his submission, Assistant Supritendent Evance Kantukule Prayed for a stiff custodial sentence citing that the case is not only serious in nature but also hazardous to humanity that upon consumption it affects functionality of the brain.

In his mitigation, Alfred Chagaga begged for leniency citing that his age is not befitting prison detention.

Passing Judgement his worship Shukurani Kumbani quashed him and sentenced him to 5 years imprisonment with hard labor.

Chagaga hails from Chioza Village Traditional Authority Nsamala in Balaka District.
