Malamia PMS Women’s Welfare cheer up inmates at Mangochi Prison

In a bid to ease challenges faced by inmates, the Malamia Police Mobile Service (PMS) Women’s Welfare on July 21, 2025, donated assorted items to six female and 22 elderly male prisoners at Mangochi Prison.

The group, led by its Chairperson Stella Kanjanga, wife to the Deputy Camp Commander donated the items using funds contributed by the women themselves.

The donation included 100kgs of maize flour, 25kgs of rice, 10 kgs of salt, five litres of cooking oil, and one bale of soya pieces.

Speaking during the handover ceremony, Kanjanga noted that prisons are among the most isolated places in society, and people rarely visit them, hence they were compelled to reach out.

“We are aware of the challenges you are facing. Giving does not require having much just a little can bring a smile and make a difference,” Kanjanga said.

Sub-Inspector Edith Asima, a prison warder, commended the group for the kind gesture, agreeing with Kanjanga that prisons are often neglected adding that the donation would indeed have an impact.

Speaking on behalf of the other inmates, Shakira Kennes, who is serving a six-year sentence for grievous harm expressed gratitude for the support and described the donation as timely.

“We are not here because we are bad people, but because at some point we crossed the line and the law took its course. Being inside here is indeed challenging” Kennes said.

She further called on other women’s groups to emulate the example set by Malamia PMS Women’s Welfare.

This is not the first time the group has engaged in charity work. Last year, they donated assorted items to St. Martin’s Hospital, and on New Year’s Day, they cheered up 30 children with disabilities in the Malindi area. Kanjanga reaffirmed their commitment to continue such initiatives for the greater good.
