One dies in a road accident

A 44-year-old medical assistant, Paul Kumala, has died after his motorcycle plunged into a deep trench due to speeding at Chindamba village along the Mangochi–Makanjira Road.

The tragic incident occurred in the early hours of July 2, 2025, along a section of the Makanjira road currently under construction.

On the said date, Kumala who was based at Lungwena Health Centre was riding a Yamaha motorcycle, registration number MG789AQ, from the direction of Mangochi heading towards Lungwena.

Upon arrival at Chindamba village, he reportedly failed to negotiate a right diversion due to excessive speed, causing him to lose control of the motorcycle. The bike veered off the road and fell into a deep trench.

As a result of the impact, Kumala who had no crush helmet sustained a severe head injury and a fractured right arm. He was rushed to Mangochi District Hospital, where he was pronounced dead upon arrival.

The motorcycle had its headlamp broken, front wheel, forks, and dashboard damaged.

Meanwhile, Police in the district are urging all road users to exercise caution, especially along roads currently under construction.

Kumala hailed from Jambo village, Traditional Authority Mbenje in Nsanje.
