Police in Mangochi over the weekend arrested a 23-year-old musician, Abdul-Karim Saidi, popularly known as Bandera, on allegations of abducting a 14-year-old Form 2 student from the district.
Reports indicate that Bandera allegedly initiated a romantic relationship with the minor three months ago. On the night of January 2, 2025, he reportedly picked her up from Mpondas area.
After driving around the township for several hours, he took her to his house. When the minor refused to stay overnight, Bandera allegedly took her to a lodge, where they spent two days.
During her absence, the girl’s mother attempted to contact her by phone multiple times, but her calls went unanswered. When the minor insisted on returning home, Bandera called the mother, assuring her not to worry about the child’s whereabouts.
Acting cautiously, the mother arranged a meeting with Bandera with the help of family members. When Bandera arrived, they handed him over to the police.
The minor later disclosed that she was menstruating during the stay and claimed that no intimate activity occurred. She was referred to Mangochi District Hospital for a medical examination, with police awaiting the results.
During questioning, Bandera claimed his intention was to shoot a music video with the minor.
He has been charged with abduction under Section 136 of the Penal Code, which carries a maximum penalty of seven years imprisonment.
Bandera, who hails from Kalonga Village, Traditional Authority Mapira, in Mangochi, is expected to appear in court once the necessary paperwork is finalized.
