Police Officers under Kawale on Friday, October, 25, 2024 were groomed on various roles and mandate of Independent Complaints Commission (ICC) that helps police officers be law compliant, a catalyst that brings public trust.
Independent Complaints Commission (ICC) team called a meeting at Kawale Police Station with the sole aim of lobbying police officers to build a culture of accountability by adhering to the code of ethics that will bring out services of high standards meeting public expectations.
The ICC established under Section 128 of the 2010 Police act, and is an independent body that has the power to receive and investigate complaints by public against police. Not only that, it also has the obligations to forward recommendations to the Inspector General of Police(IGP) on matters that needs disciplinary actions and to Director of Public Prosecution on criminal cases.
Speaking during the meeting, Rose Waliyi, Principal Civic Education Officer at ICC informed police officers that the organisation should not be deemed as an enemy but rather a tool that helps police organisation instill discipline and professionalism whenever serving citizen.
Our organization aims at bringing an accountable and professional police that is compliant with the law, henceforth building public confidence and trust. Said Rose.
Sella Kamtayeni concurred with the former. She highlighted the cases that the commission has so far handled, such as death of suspects in police cells, failure to handle complaints, unlawful detention, and abuse of office, just to mention but a few. She went on to elaborate that ICC mandate is on MPS and not on any other security organ nor security body.
Mr Davie Chilalire, the Officer In-Charge (OC) for Kawale took time also to elaborate on the organisation citing that it even helps to speed up investigations of cases against police officers and get immediate clearance.
He further thanked the ICC team for the visit, asking the team frequently visit the station so that many officers should be taken aboard.
Before closing the meeting, officers expressed their worries which were responded to by the ICC team. The ICC team assured the officers that all suggestions they presentedwould be brought to the attention of the Commission.
