Chief Assani electrocuted on ESCOM powerlines in failed theft attempt

A 57-year-old Village Headman(VH) Assani, identified as Stand Ayami, has died after being electrocuted while attempting to steal from an Escom powerline. The incident occurred when he climbed a pole and cut a stay wire, leading to his death.

The tragedy took place at Chipunga Estate under Traditional Authority Bwananyambi in Mangochi district.

It was reported that VH Assani, who was a well-known tinsmith, left his house on the night of September 12, 2024, for an unknown destination and did not return. The following morning, his lifeless body was discovered under the Escom powerlines at Chipunga Estate, with severe burn injuries covering his body.

Police, along with medical personnel and Escom officials, arrived at the scene, where VH Assani’s body was found holding a hacksaw in his right hand, with a piece of ESCOM wire and fragments of the hacksaw scattered around him.

It is believed that VH Assani climbed to the high-voltage fuse point of the powerlines to steal the stay wire for his business but was electrocuted in the process.

Police have warned the public against tampering with or stealing Escom property, stating that it is dangerous and life-threatening. They also urged people to report anyone found engaging in such criminal activities, as they negatively affect electricity supply.

The deceased hailed from Assani Village, under Traditional Authority Bwananyambi in Mangochi.
