A new report on hunger in Malawi shows the country will require to spend K14 billion to buy humanitarian food aid to stave off hunger which threatens 2.6 Malawians during the 2020/21 consumption year.
The Malawi Vulnerability Assessment Committee (MVAC) report says up to 2 million people affected by hunger are in the rural areas, while about 600,000 are urban citizens.
Up to 57,000 metric tonnes of food is required, the MVAC said in the report released Wednesday.
The hunger has been blamed on COVID-19 pandemic due to loss of jobs that has trimmed income, floods, dry spells and fall army worms which reduced maize yields, the staple food of most people.
