In a transformative move to ignite grassroots volleyball, the Volleyball Association of Malawi (VAM) orchestrated a pivotal National Volleyball Training Course in Karonga from November 13th to November 18th, 2023. This initiative aimed to elevate coaching expertise and propel the sport’s growth at the community level.

Under coaches Jonas Oswald Chokhotho and Ronald Mwale, the course drew 20 school teachers and five community team coaches, empowering them with the knowledge and skills to foster young talent and cultivate a passion for the sport.

The program’s success resulted in the conferral of certificates, officially welcoming the newly trained coaches into the volleyball coaching fraternity. The occasion was graced by the presence of Regional Sports Development Officer North, Mr. Gracian Mkandawire, and District Education Sports Officer for Karonga, Mr. Patrick Simwayi, both expressing unwavering support for volleyball development in Karonga.

Dr. Thulani Maphosa, Malawi’s Head Coach, lauded the program’s potential to introduce volleyball at the grassroots, envisioning increased popularity nationwide. “A continued exchange of knowledge and an expanded coaching network are paramount,” he emphasized.

Mr. James Kaunda, President of VAM, expressed gratitude to the Malawi Government, particularly the Malawi National Council of Sports (MNCS), for sponsoring this strategic program aligned with the federation’s vision. “Karonga’s volleyball potential will flourish, nurturing a new breed of adept coaches,” he commented.
